Broadcast Journalism I is a beginning course which will teach students how to shoot and edit videotape.  The students learn about television news and what goes into a good story.  They also learn how to run a field camera and how to operate a computer editing program.  Additionally, they learn basic operation of the equipment in a television studio; including, an audio board, a video switcher, studio cameras, and a character generator.

Toward the end of the year, the students get a chance to become contributors for our live on-air broadcast.  They will also have the chance to serve as anchor for our daily newscast, run camera, and work in the control room.

The class is a proving ground for the Broadcast II class.  Only about half of the students will be allowed to move up to Broadcast II, the class where we produce the daily broadcast.  To succeed in Broadcast I a student will start producing interesting features that we can use on the broadcast and show a tremendous interest in the broadcast.
